Who we are and what the future holds

In November 2012, Police Authorities across England and Wales will be replaced by Police and Crime Commissioners (PCCs). Elections will take place nationwide on 15 November, 2012, and our local electorate from across Knowsley, Liverpool, Sefton, St Helens and Wirral will be able to vote for their choice of candidate for Merseyside's PCC.

The elected candidate will take up their post a week later, at which point they will become responsible for police governance locally, and will hold Merseyside Police and the Chief Constable to account.

They will have similar responsibilities to those the Police Authority currently has, such as the responsibility to recruit, and if necessary, dismiss the Chief Constable. They will also publish a 'Police and Crime Plan' and deal with community safety and security.
