Merseyside Police Authority honours Police handling of summer disorder
Press Release
Date: January 23, 2012
On Thursday 19th January, Members of
Merseyside Police Authority recognised the bravery and
professionalism shown by officers and staff of Merseyside Police
during the public disorder that took place across Merseyside in
August.
Cllr Bill Weightman, Chair of Merseyside Police Authority, presented the prestigious Award of Merit to Inspector Sue Stribling of St Anne Street Police Station and the force's Engineering and Transport Manager, Walter Pass, both of whom collected the accolade on behalf of the Chief Constable, his police officers and staff. Merit Awards are usually given to individual officers who have gone above and beyond the call of duty but the Police Authority took the unprecedented step of honouring all employees of Merseyside Police following the widespread disorder.
Cllr Weightman said, 'the Police Authority wanted to acknowledge the bravery and determination of those who worked tirelessly to prevent crime and disorder throughout the unrest. Merseyside Police officers and staff pulled together and showed a huge amount of professionalism in a situation that tested their resilience to the limit. I would also like to mention those in support and voluntary roles who came forward and provided invaluable assistance to the police, allowing officers to concentrate on frontline duties and, to the Merseyside community, who supported officers during and after the unrest.'
Chief Constable Jon Murphy said: "I am incredibly proud of the policing operation we delivered during last summer's violent disorder, and the excellent work of everyone involved. Our officers and staff faced difficult and challenging situations but dealt with them courageously and professionally throughout."
