New members for Merseyside Police Authority
MERSEYSIDE Police Authority has appointed three new Independent Members.
Maureen Lewis, Frances Street and Bob Waring have been selected to serve as independent members of the Authority from October 1st until March 31st, 2013. The official announcement of their appointment was made at a meeting of the Police Authority on Thursday, September 25.
Mr Waring served on Sefton Council for 13 years and on Merseyside County Council for five years. Mrs Lewis is currently a magistrate on the Liverpool Bench and was appointed as Chairman of the Bench in 1998.
Mrs Street has already served on the Police Authority as a magistrate member for the last five years but she has now been appointed as an independent member. She is Chair of Wirral Primary Care Trust, a position she has held for two years. She has been a magistrate on the Wirral Bench for 24 years.
Chairman of the Authority, Councillor Bill Weightman, said: "This year we received an extremely high calibre of candidates and it was a tough selection process. The new members will bring a wealth of experience to the role and I believe they will represent the people of Merseyside well.
"The role of an independent member is a very challenging one but it is an exciting time for the Police Authority and Police Service and I look forward to working with them."
A fourth independent member, David Bradbury, has been selected to serve a second term as an independent member from April 1, 2009 when his current term expires.
Two current magistrate members, Michael Amos and John Williams, terms of office expired on September 30.
The Police Authority is also pleased to announce the appointment of David Antrobus, Elizabeth Barnett and David Fletcher as Lay Members on the Authority's Standards Committee. Their appointment is immediate and lasts for four years (October 2008 to September 2012). Local Standards Committees now have enhanced responsibilities following a national review of ethical conduct of public officials and have at their disposal a range of sanction powers.
